Stephanie Andrade fell in love with teaching back in high school after volunteering at EL ARCA. Now the activity coordinator for EL ARCA’s Community-Based Adult Service Center, Stephanie is able to realize her passion every day by working hands-on with the center’s developmentally disabled participants.

“Just because they are born with a disability, doesn’t mean they aren’t able to learn,” she says.

Stephanie works with participants on their math, reading and writing skills. If they are unable to move well, she teaches prompting and listening exercises. She also encourages participants to participate in outdoor activities such as basketball, bean bag throws and walks.

Sometimes, she explains, the biggest teaching challenges can also result in the most satisfying moments. Stephanie recalls the time she could not get through to one of her new participants. The woman, who has Down’s syndrome, wasn’t interested in participating in activities or actively listening. But in March, Stephanie had a breakthrough.

As the young woman sat on the floor, refusing to budge, Stephanie took her hand and spoke gently with her. “I was holding her hand, and out of nowhere, she gave me a hug,” Stephanie says. “And I was just holding her and almost kind of dancing with her.” Stephanie felt she had finally earned the woman’s trust, and it felt wonderful.

“Our staff is here for people’s loved ones, so they know that with the care we are providing, they’re in good hands,” Stephanie says.
